Powder Coating Specification: Start with the Project Location

A new mapping tool puts the destination first

On October 30, 2026, Dulux Powder Coatings Australia announced SpecMap, a location-based specification tool. The announcement describes Australian environmental data being used to identify corrosivity zones and suggest Dulux products and potential warranty suitability. For buyers, the useful takeaway is to define where a coated component will be installed before asking for a powder recommendation.

The official SpecMap page explains that saltwater influence can reach estuaries, rivers and other waterways. It also warns that local conditions, including industrial pollution and windborne abrasive material, can change the exposure indicated by a map. Dulux describes its output as indicative and recommends confirming the specification. Its tool and warranty arrangements concern Dulux systems; they do not qualify DAMEI products.

Replace “outdoor use” with an environmental brief

A city name and a RAL code leave too much open. Prepare a short location brief that the powder supplier, component manufacturer and project specifier can all review:

  • Exact destination: give the installation address or coordinates, nearby coast or estuary, and whether the component faces a sheltered courtyard, open water or an industrial site.
  • Local exposure: identify salt deposits, process emissions, cleaning chemicals, windblown sand and any known periods of persistent moisture.
  • Installed orientation: distinguish exposed faces, undersides, recesses and surfaces protected from rain. Do not assume rainfall cleans every part of the assembly.
  • Use and access: state whether the component is fixed, mobile or temporarily stored outdoors, and how maintenance teams will reach it.
  • Project requirements: supply the specified coating system, test methods, appearance criteria and any documented approval requirement.

These inputs turn a broad environmental label into questions that can be checked against a candidate formulation and the actual component.

Review the destination of modular and fabricated components

For container-house frames and panels, discuss both the delivery route and the final installation. A factory sample describes the finish at approval; the buyer should separately consider storage, transport, handling damage and the maintenance access available after assembly.

DAMEI's container-house powder coating is developed for frames, panels and related fabricated steel parts. Its selection process considers the installation climate as well as component geometry and production conditions. Supply photographs or drawings of sheltered faces and assembly joints with the location brief, so those details enter the discussion before sampling.

For other weather-exposed metalwork, DAMEI's outdoor pure polyester powder coating offers a relevant starting category. The exact durability grade, color, finish and validation requirements still need project review. A polyester label alone does not establish a fixed service life, certification or warranty.

Agree a maintenance assumption and an approval record

Ask who will clean the installed components, which cleaning procedure is permitted and how sheltered areas will be included. Record those assumptions with the specification. If cleaning access is impractical, raise that constraint before approving the coating rather than leaving it for the building operator to discover.

Then agree what evidence the project needs: the named formulation and technical-data revision, representative samples, relevant test records and the conditions under which they apply. Keep the destination brief with those documents. When a project moves to another site or its exposure changes, review the selection instead of automatically repeating the previous order.

Contact DAMEI with the destination, component drawings, substrate, desired appearance and project requirements. We can discuss candidate powders and the sample-validation plan around the environment your parts will actually face.
