How the VOC mass estimate works

On a mass basis, estimated VOC grams equal coating used in kg multiplied by the product VOC value in g/kg. On a volume basis, estimated VOC grams equal liters used multiplied by g/L. The result is then divided by 1000 for kilograms.

Start with a current product-specific value

Use the exact formulation, color, batch or mixed state covered by the current TDS, SDS or relevant laboratory report. Keep its stated units and test basis; a value for one product or state must not be assigned to another.

Do not assume every powder coating is zero VOC

Powder technology can reduce solvent use compared with many liquid systems, but formulation, additives, handling and cure-related releases can differ. Enter zero only when current evidence for the exact product and selected basis supports zero.

Know what this simple estimate excludes

The calculation excludes pretreatment chemicals, cleaning solvents, fuels, combustion products, cure or thermal-decomposition by-products, waste, particulate emissions, reclaim effects and capture or destruction controls. Account for those separately when relevant.

A result is not a compliance decision

Applicable definitions, exemptions, averaging periods, limits, approved methods, recordkeeping and permit requirements depend on the jurisdiction and process. This tool intentionally contains no EPA, SCAQMD or other authority pass/fail threshold.

Build an auditable planning record

Record the product identity, document revision, VOC value and unit, quantity basis, reporting period, data owner and calculation. For an official inventory, permit or submission, use the method and approvals required by the applicable authority.

Can I enter zero for a powder coating?

Only when a current product document or relevant test supports zero for the exact formulation, state and unit basis. The calculator never supplies zero as a default.

Does the estimate include booth capture or control efficiency?

No. It reports only material quantity multiplied by the entered product factor. Capture, destruction, reclaim and other process controls require separate verified treatment.

Can I use this result to prove regulatory compliance?

No. Compliance depends on the applicable rule, approved methods, process boundary, exemptions, averaging period and authority acceptance. Obtain qualified local review.

Why can I choose mass or volume?

Product documents may state VOC content in g/kg or g/L. Choose the matching basis and keep the material quantity in kg or L so the units cancel correctly.
