Define humidity and condensation exposure
Humidity testing evaluates a coated specimen under a named water-condensation atmosphere. It is not salt spray, water immersion, outdoor weathering or a generic climate-chamber cycle. The result belongs to the complete coating, pretreatment, substrate and specimen design under the selected procedure.
Select one governing method and edition
ASTM D2247-25 exposes the entire specimen at 100% relative humidity so condensation forms on all surfaces. ISO 6270-1:2017 uses single-sided condensation, while ISO 6270-2:2025 covers constant or alternating condensation-water atmospheres in a cabinet with a heated reservoir. These arrangements are not interchangeable; name the exact method and cycle.
Prepare a representative coated specimen
Record substrate, pretreatment, powder product and batch, color or texture, dry-film thickness, cure history, edges and back protection, scribe condition, orientation, conditioning and control panels. The exposure practices do not create a universal specimen or acceptance rule, so preparation must follow the product or customer specification.
Control the chamber and exposure record
Document chamber type, water quality, temperature and humidity controls, constant or alternating cycle, specimen spacing and orientation, condensation distribution, interruptions, inspection schedule and control performance. Prevent droplets or carryover from one specimen becoming an unrecorded test condition, and record every deviation before comparing results.
Evaluate damage without universal hours
Predefine exposure duration, interim inspections, recovery time and rating methods for blistering, rusting, staining, softening, wrinkling, embrittlement, adhesion change and substrate attack. ASTM D2247 does not set one product pass time, and ISO 6270-2 does not specify duration or result assessment. Report observations and the contractual decision rule instead of copying a generic hour claim.
Interpret humidity within the full quality plan
ASTM D2247 says laboratory humidity time must not be represented as equivalent natural-water exposure without established quantitative correlation. A passing condensation result alone does not prove salt-spray, immersion, chemical, ultraviolet, adhesion or field-life performance. ASTM D3451 ties method selection and interpretation to the application and purchaser-seller agreement.
FAQ
How many humidity-test hours should powder coating pass?
There is no universal duration. The governing product or customer specification must define the method, cycle, specimen, evaluation, recovery period and acceptance authority.
Is a humidity test the same as a salt-spray test?
No. Humidity methods create water condensation without the salt solution and operating conditions of ASTM B117 or ISO 9227. Their results answer different questions.
Are ASTM D2247 and ISO 6270 results interchangeable?
No. Whole-specimen, single-sided, constant and alternating condensation arrangements differ. Compare only specimens tested under the same named method and cycle.
Does blistering prove the powder itself is defective?
Not by itself. Coating formulation, substrate contamination, pretreatment, film build, cure, edge preparation and specimen handling can all contribute and must be investigated.
